Five Tips For Being More Sustainable Everyday

In the last few years, the use of the words “sustainable” and “sustainability” have skyrocketed across many different industries, conversations with governments, and with activists making a case for change.  Even recently, we’ve heard how COVID-19 has proven to have had a silver lining with how it’s allowed the earth to take a breather and rest from the damage the human race has done to it.  While it’s amazing to see this in conversation more often, there’s still so much that can be done and it all starts with all of us putting in our part for the greater good.  Below is a list of 5 easy tips for living more sustainably every day.


1. Opt for a water filter and a reusable bottle: Americans still use approximately 50 billion plastic water bottles a year.  And while recycling has become part of a modern lifestyle, an unsettling fact remains: ~90% of plastic is not recycled. Not only does this tip help avoid congesting our oceans with plastic, but it’s also cheaper than buying water bottles and can actually be healthier, since water bottles can leak harmful substances into the water you drink. Triple win!


2. Buy products in bulk: Similar to tip #1, this is tip aims at reducing waste as that’s where all sustainability efforts should start.  The EPA estimated that containers and packaging amounted to ~80.1 million tons of waste generated in 2017 in the US alone.  That’s over 450 lbs of waste generated per person in a year!  Buy things like nuts, seeds, beans, fruits, vegetables, and meat package-free and you’re off to a great start.  Say no to the plastic bags in the produce section to cut even more waste out (remember, you should be washing them before consumption anyways).


3. Make your own nut milk: This tip assumes you’re already opting for a non-dairy alternative (e.g., almond milk, oat milk, rice milk).  If you aren’t yet, switching to one is a great start!  Research clearly shows that non-dairy milks use less land and water per gallon than animal milks.  Plus, it’s much easier to blend nuts at home than buying a cow once you decide to take it a step further and eliminate the wasted packaging from store bought milks.  To make 32 oz of almond milk at home, first soak 1 cup of almonds in water for 12-16 hours.  Once the almonds are finished soaking, blend them with 1/4 tsp of sea salt and a splash of vanilla for about 1-2 minutes on the high setting.  Lastly, use a nut milk bag or a cheese cloth to strain the almond pulp out of the milk.  The result is a creamy, preservative free, almond milk that’s a lot more nutrient dense than traditional almond milks.  And think of all the paper / plastic you’ll save!


4. Shop recycled toilet paper: Who needs virgin paper (i.e., made directly from trees) to wipe themselves when it is literally flushed down the toilet within 5 seconds of using it?  Across the world, we flush the equivalent of 27,000 trees down the toilet ever single day.  Read that again if you need to.  Instead, purchase recycled toilet paper to avoid the additional deforestation of one of our world’s most precious resources.  And no, recycled toiled paper doesn’t come from recycling used toilet paper; it’s made from other sources of paper waste and is just as sanitary as virgin toilet paper.


5. Reuse your clothing as appropriate before washing: Have you ever been guilty of throwing a shirt or a pair of sweats into the laundry after wearing it for a few hours while lounging around the house?  Many people are, but instead of guilt tripping yourself, do something about it!  Use the classic sniff test when deciding whether something needs to be washed or not.  Some garments can actually go several times before being washed.  For example, we recommend wearing your custom made LASSO jeans at least 5 times before throwing it into the wash.  It also helps make your clothing last longer since all clothing sheds fibers every time it goes through the washing and drying process.
